Reading Ezra Pound and Wyndham Lewis helped me understand that English self-hatred—perphaps more accurately decadence—has deep roots. The unrealism of the metropolis, insultated from reality for too long, gave rise to decadence by at least the early 1900s.

The clocks were tolling for England in 1900. Germany had caught up and exceeded her in science and industry. They US was bursting to get on the international scene. The English hegemony of th 19th century was ready to pop.

This makes the American situation clearer. America, a greater Empire than England’s (more an empire of the mind), is so lost in luxury that her elites are no longer in the real world remotely. She is also ready to go pop. You could say that she had her century: 1917-2017.

“The American Century: 1917-2017” That has a nice ring for future histories. Are we in a Chinese century, now? Or will we live in a disputed century? Possibly we will only know after the next major war.
