It's a dangerous time for honesty in the west; we seem to cycle through phases of openness and dogma. My feeling is that people who are not predisposed towards irony are suffering greatly from a lack of authenticity and meaning. Earnestness cannot return quickly enough.

often more persuasive to point out an irony in the opposing opinion. Should an interlocutor concede the point, they will seek an alternate view themselves. They are more apt to trust themselves than another, who has no rapport with them.

I suspect we often are divided selves based on a variety of factors that shift often. One big one is uncertainty. We are often told to hold strong opinions on extraordinarily complex things. Democratic measures do this too. It also acts as a grey area btwn sincerity and irony
