Is @bronzeagemantis “gay”? This question exercises many people. His hero is Cellini. His banner is “Perseus with the Head of Medusa”. Cellini was accused of sodomy, but he also had children with his servant. BAP is a consistent Hellenist. What does this mean for his sexuality?

Ancient Greek attitudes to homosexuality varied. Broadly, we might say that “boy loving” was permissible for a limited time—you were expected to grow out of it. It was particularly shameful to be the receptive partner in a homosexual relationship.

The Ancient Greeks agreed with BAP that “grils are groace”, and to be the receptive partner was woman-like and so shameful. The Greeks didn’t always see homosexuality in simple sexual terms, though. There was an element of the erotic, particularly connected to education.

The love between master & student, for example, could approach a highly refined form of erotic desire. Education, from the Latin, means to “lead out”. Education is, in a sense, a seduction of the pupil by the master—not necessarily sexual, but a highly tense power relation.

In addition to this, the Ancient Greeks cultivated a highly aesthetic approach to appreciating the body. BAP would doubtless agree with Schopenhauer that women are rather ugly & ill formed baby making machines. They cannot approach he elegance of a male body. The Ancients agreed.

Women were required for reproduction, and doubtless BAP wishes to do his eugenic duty and perpetuate his noble line. But there was no pretence in the Greek world that women were a romantic love match & equal as in the contemporary West.

The world of men was a world of intense fraternal organisations, often military. Gore Vidal, who did not describe himself as “gay”, noted—as BAP does—that these clubs and associations served as a guard against tyranny.

The contemporary notion of “gay” is meaningless in this sense. We are speaking of a highly aestheticised world, strong erotic (non-sexual bonds), and some homosexual sex (limited by age & partner) in a world where women are marginal.

Other figures on the right, like Jack Donovan, show a similar unease with the notion of being “gay”. Conclusion: BAP is probably happy to have children, have sex with women, and indulge in boy love (celebate & carnal)—but he will be the “top”, that’s for sure.
