“Funeral Blues” suffered from Four Weddings & A Funeral where it was used by a man saying goodbye to his lover. It’s about a dictator’s death, not a lover’s death. Realising this changes its meaning significantly
WH Auden was the poet laureate of the welfare state. I still enjoy “September 1, 1939”, “Funeral Blues”, and “As I Walked Out One Evening”. However, he is generally a sentimental and bad poet.

I occasionally read a like of Auden I love, then I keep reading and he just ruins it.
