You’re probably just blundering around, even if you find a “good” shaman (what does “good” even mean in this context? how much do the people doing this actually know about these cultures?).

It’s similar to the LSD craze. The main benefit is probably ego dissolution and feeling of oneness w/ universe. It’s possible to generate this through walking & meditation. I know, cause I’ve done it.

You don’t need to take the drugs. As my mother said, “Yes, it sounds like you were in a dissociative state, Tom.” Probably true, or close enough to being true. I can see why people preach about ayahuasca or LSD, bc it is a great experience. But it’s a shortcut, possibly not gud.

My spouse's mother did it, in a place in Peru ran by a "western doctor" - they spend a week fasting and taking purgatives in complete isolation, plus there's high altitude your body isn't used to. I think the point is to shock both body & mind as much as possible before the trip.
