/ Notes on pay & gender: I had a friend whose wife was an extremely competent, well educated lawyer & elite lawyer. But she would not ask for a pay rise. This is basically a problem for women because they worry about “fairness” & whether they “deserve” something. #GenderPayGap

/ That’s just how women are. Pay negotiations are not about fairness. It’s about how much the market is willing to pay for your skill & how well you negotiate with a particular boss. You may even beat your market value if you outwit him.

/ A man will usually go in high and then let his boss try to force him down. The woman will ask something along the lines, “May I have, perhaps £1000 more. Do I deserve that? I feel guilty asking. I’m not being too pushy am I?” It can be difficult to get them to do that.

/ I think this is probably hardwired. You can train women to be more assertive, but they’ll always be fighting their nature and it will wear off in many cases. However, there is a spectrum and some men act like this too.

/ What is a fair wage? I don’t know. The market deals in the signals for what is wanted + your own negotiating abilities. That’s not necessarily fair, though maybe it is sometimes. Does a footballer deserve more money than a cleaner? I don’t know.

/ It’s worth asking the question. But people who don’t negotiate better salaries because they’re worried about an abstract & unresolved philosophical question are being foolish. No one else is holding back based on what will be an idiosyncratic assessment of “fair”.

/ You’re merely sacrificing your own welfare for an extremely abstract principle and ignoring reality. Pay negotiations should simply be looked at as a question of maximising your position. It’s the responsibility of yr boss to be responsible w/ his pay budget, so don’t worry.

/ Most women will always be softer, more empathetic, less competitive (or rather competitive in a particular way not necessarily connected to work), more reluctant to be pushy. They’re more emotional than men, and that goes into pay negotiations. They’re worried about fairness.

/ But this isn’t the fairness of the philosopher John Rawls or Kant. It’s a much more subjective emotional perception that can’t be generalised into an ethical system. Conclusion: women are often paid less than men bc of their nature + pregnancy.
