/ Notes on pay & gender: I had a friend whose wife was an extremely competent, well educated lawyer & elite lawyer. But she would not ask for a pay rise. This is basically a problem for women because they worry about “fairness” & whether they “deserve” something. #GenderPayGap
/ It’s worth asking the question. But people who don’t negotiate better salaries because they’re worried about an abstract & unresolved philosophical question are being foolish. No one else is holding back based on what will be an idiosyncratic assessment of “fair”.

/ You’re merely sacrificing your own welfare for an extremely abstract principle and ignoring reality. Pay negotiations should simply be looked at as a question of maximising your position. It’s the responsibility of yr boss to be responsible w/ his pay budget, so don’t worry.

/ Most women will always be softer, more empathetic, less competitive (or rather competitive in a particular way not necessarily connected to work), more reluctant to be pushy. They’re more emotional than men, and that goes into pay negotiations. They’re worried about fairness.

/ But this isn’t the fairness of the philosopher John Rawls or Kant. It’s a much more subjective emotional perception that can’t be generalised into an ethical system. Conclusion: women are often paid less than men bc of their nature + pregnancy.
