I probably ought have pursued a trade, but the mistake was in never considering a career, just meekly staying on the "track" that people from my demographic tended to follow.

In all, I wish I'd married younger and started a family earlier. Risk aversion, as is so common amongst my generation, limits the occurrence of teachable moments, but increases the likelihood of big mistakes.
