The problem was her desire for image control and perfection. The former is typical of contemporary politics and the latter feminine. She refused to go and meet the people for fear of an uncontrolled situation.
Theresa May & Grenfell Tower: This event showed up both the limits of female leadership and the limits of managed political leadership. May bungled an opportunity to cement her leadership & lost credibility in a major way.

But, in reality, she couldn’t lose. The best case scenario would have been a front page of her hugging a crying victim. Immediately humanising and very good press. The worst scenario was a riot against her. This would have also been good press. She would have become the victim.

Instead, she hung back and looked like a cold, calculating, coward. Corbyn, admittedly in a stronger position, waded in and received good coverage. Conclusion: leadership requires courage, initiative, and the comfort with the unexpected. May demonstrated neither. Price paid.
