Strange, I think. I reassure him. I tell him where I am from...he sort of opens up. It is only months later, reading about US colleges, that I realise he has been indoctrinated not to reply to this question. In this way, the amity between people is destroyed.

We are forbidden to ask, “Where are you from?” And so we never discover a city in common that we visited, a common family, a common football team, a common interest. We are utterly atomised, reduced to banalities. Always ask, “Where are you from?” Always connect.
