“English nationalists” are bombastic and celebrate the wrong aspects of Englishness. What makes the English great is becoming small: tea, dogs, tinkering with machines, irony, navigation. We were forced into the Empire. It all happened incidentally, chaps.
The English could only succeed in conquering large sections of the world through the celebration of defeats or near defeats, notably Rorke’s Drift. To be English is always to be outnumbered and surrounded and wryly amused by the situation. Shall we take tea?

Men who set out to “conquer worlds”: Hitler, Napoleon...come to dust. The way to conquer worlds is not to try. Trade, piracy, exploration, inquisitiveness, practical deals...you may acquire an empire by accident, always the best way. None of this vulgar showing off.
