It was a UBI partition so you either need to mount it through mtd mechanisms or use a tool like ubi_reader and extract the squashfs filesystem

I haven’t heard from them and from others experience don’t expect a response.

Honest question, how is the average consumer intended to setup a home router and securely do it over https? Just ignore the self cert warnings? Or just have the router only negotiate http?
-
A self-signed certificate auto-generated by the device upon first boot and ignoring the "invalid certificate" warning upon the first connection would be just fine. Basically TOFU, (similar to the common practice with SSH server keys). When in doubt, use a direct cable connection.

Yeah, well, not so many possibilities: 1. Only HTTP (bad) 2. HTTPS with selfsigned cert (bad) 3. HTTPS with static public CA signed cert in firmware (bad) So I per default disable remote management and all access to routers from outside and use my own PKI issued certs locally.

4. Issue each device a key pair to <HWMAC>.routerconfig.net or somesuch signed by a Netgear corporate cert. Device serves it's pages under that domian name with an http redirect to get there. Include instructions to verify MAC vs. device label.
