They were correct to do so. The liberal/centrists in Germany thought that political office would moderate the Nazis, or that they'd be a fad, or that they'd be easy to beat next time. The only ones actually fighting Nazis were german socialists and they were killed for it.

Corporatism is inevitable in capitalism. As corporations grow, consolidate market share and get closer to monopoly they will invest in political campaigns to ensure favorable policies that enrich them like subsidies and no bid contracts. They are interconnected
