    Orwell had a great bit about this in 1984, someone complaining about how the Party enforcing the metric system messed up the beer measurements because a half liter glass of beer isn’t enough but a liter glass is too much

    Living in the UK, I got so sick of asking for 568.3 milliliters of beer at the pub. One day I broke down and shouted "one proud imperial pint of bitter, barman!" Damned if the EU metric measurements enforcement team didn't find out and make me move back to the US. True story!

    The number of reporters dunking on this, admittedly less than perfect, analogy on Twitter who clearly didn’t listen to the pod, where makes sure we cover the obvious next question about regulation, is remarkable.

    “Cars create way more value in the world than they destroyed. And I think social media is similar” Instagram boss on WSJ piece re: IG research that suggests the app can be harmful to its teenage users.

    (I still think it should be a thing! When I land on a news article or wikipedia page or whatever, some little browser extension should light up to alert me if someone I follow has left a note on it. This feels like not rocket science!)

    Being able to annotate any web page, and see annotations left by your friends / people you follow etc, is one of those internet things that has felt like it should be a Thing for like 20 years now, and just never worked out.

    While I had no involvement whatsoever in 's very thorough reporting in the WSJ on FB's x-check system, I was quoted in the article based on a leaked internal post, so I am compelled to give a more full perspective.

    I’ve been on a Facebook project for months, and it’s nowhere near done. But this is the first story: TL:DR: Facebook, which talks a lot about democratizing voice, secretly exempted “VIP” users from its rules in “not publicly defensible” ways.
