For any serious, young intellectual with even a foot in the door of institutional prestige, the question is: Will you go out like a champ now, in a beautiful gesture of your own making, or will you go out later, in a defensive stupor, exhausted by a life of walking on eggshells?

i accidentally blew out a year ago. can't recommend it, but also can't see any way to continue on in this milieu with any semblance of integrity or dignity. it's seemingly intractable. my respect to you though, for what you've been through. i suppose it all gets worse from here

stay at home dad, have a small home business that doesn't have my name visibly attached to it. my wife's fairly successful and i obviously can't jeopardize that. financially we're fine, but sadly i'll never work in my field again

If my wife made a lot of money then staying home w kids sounds pretty good... (writing what I could). Do you think you made the right choice or you wonder?

Except you’d end up writing about baby milk formulas and children’s football tournaments

hahaha, it's not so bad tbh. but come to think of it, i haven't done much serious intellectual work since making the change. such is life i guess.
