To make this criticism sincerely, you must support an immigration policy that would let Javid's father in now. Global open borders and Commonwealth free movement pass that test. Few pro-migration politicians propose this. Current LibDem policy would not.

So OK to criticise Sajid Javid if you *do* support open borders. Does a child of migrants have a special responsibility to support that? But not to criticise Vince Cable, Nicola Sturgeon, Yvette Cooper, Amber Rudd, none of whom propose policies that would let Javid's father in?

Javid could say his policy is more open to Pakistan (but higher skills). Tougher on the future Polish son of the bus driver But I don't really want ethnic minority politicians to have diaspora-specific commitments (as can happen in US, lobby for eg Irish, Italian etc visas)

For a serious, nuanced & sincere critique of Javid, see @garyyounge I don't agree with all of this, but a serious case https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/may/03/sajid-javid-father-immigration-poverty-british-pakistani-tory … "His reforms wouldn't let his own Dad in" is mostly factually inaccurate, regressive in its selective hit and run tweeting. Avoid it!

I'm glad we have a Home Secretary who says immigration has made Britain stronger. I'd like to hear it, just as much, from politicians who don't have the back story. Let's judge Said Javid, Sadiq Khan or Diane Abbott primarily on the front-story they put with their back-story.

Sajid Javid's instincts on immigration (if he can get them past the current prime minister) align with those of most second generation Britons: we are balancers, like everyone else, but tend to see the glass as a bit more half-full. On other hand, I would criticise any politician who did not defend the core principle of refugee protection. Child of refugees, or any migrant, failing that might jar more. On economic migration, I don't think we can judge future 2021 policy by its time machine 1961 impacts

My immig policy proposals would let my parents in (Indian doctor 1968, keep Irish free movement), but wouldnt if they had background of Javid's parents. His policy preferences would let my parents in, but not his own. I do not see how there is much ethical content to this lens

This does seem a pretty weak answer to a tricky question: needs a better answer!https://twitter.com/JamieGrierson/status/1047175455340675074 …

Maybe: 'I'm grateful for the opportunities that Britain gave me and my family. I'm proud of what he contributed. Of course, I'm not making policy for 1961 now, when we had free movement with Pakistan and the Commonwealth and hadn't even joined Europe yet'

In 1961 only rich people could emigrate from Pakistan etc. Now it’s much cheaper / knowledge about how to move is there in rural areas etc. The difference in human capital is noticeable. And won’t improve over time

I don't think that's historically accurate, with regard to Pakistani migration to the mill towns in particular, though it was partly true for a good deal of Commonwealth migration from 1948-68

I mean as in their background before leaving. Travel costs have plummeted, and it’s much easier to access information. Yes a lot came into low paying jobs here (often overqualified) but now it’s possible for people who are lower middle class / functionally poor to go abroad

Yes, sometimes true. But it was not the case especially for quite a few Mirpuri migrants to the mill towns. Several thousand, for example, were displaced by the local Mangla dam project, and given financial assistance to relocatehttps://books.google.co.uk/books?id=K_pGGU0cOT4C&pg=PA30&dq=Mangla+Dam+and+immigration+5,000&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q=Mangla%20Dam%20and%20immigration%205%2C000&f=false …
