Naturally, things are different for people outside of academia. Reality TV shows, performance artists, and the like do stuff that would violate Belmont all the time. And that's fine, because that's not their code of professional ethics (if such a code exists).

What's troubling is that one of the hoaxters is an Assistant Professor at Portland State University https://www.pdx.edu/philosophy/peter-boghossian … I wonder if this hoaxter sought or received IRB approval from PSU for this instance of human subjects research.

I don't work in IRB or ORI, so I can only comment vaguely on the potential consequences here, but violating IRB protocols can lead to nasty things like revocation of human subject research privileges & more severe career consequences. Maybe I'll ask my ORI what'd happen to me.

Also, I think (and could be wrong, this isn't my specialty) that an institution's (read: university's) eligibility for receiving federal funding (NSF, NIH, etc) is contingent on institution-wide compliance with federal ethics guidelines, as outlined in Belmont.

Now, there's a huge caveat here. All of this Belmont mumbo jumbo only applies to human subjects research. It doesn't apply to art, journalism, etc. So that leaves the question: is this research?

Seems to me that they're repeatedly claiming that this his research, performed on human subjects. And if you want to claim you're doing research (obviously on humans subjects), then you've gotta play by the ethical rules of human subjects research.

The (perhaps more ethical) alternative, in my opinion, would be to drop the charade, stop calling it research, and claim that this was journalism or performance art, or whatever. This move comes with strings attached, however, for the one hoaxter in academia...

Was this research (or performance art) conducted using university equipment (computers, office space) on university time? Might be able to dodge research ethics violations and plead down to misappropriation of university resources for personal artistic pursuits?

      Replying to @wgervais

Brief thread summary: I’m nervous about my sub-standard research and politically enabled tenure Ethics means useful research into disease progression is “””unethical””” This is the SAME THING The people who did this might get fired if I name drop their employers!
