I wouldn’t call you any names, you didn’t do anything I would make fun of.

Woah. Seriously dude, why would you talk to a student at your institution like this?

What did I say that’s bad? I talk to students how I would talk to any adult.

Your relationship with a student is professional, so perhaps you wouldn't talk to them exactly the same as you would a friend? But why would you use the term 'retard' anyway? It's a term which has fallen out of use for good reason: it was an insult for people with disabilities.

The first time that any form of retard was used to describe mentally disabled people was during the 1960s when "there was a push among disability advocates to use the label mental retardation".

I take your point, but language changes, and its meaning shifts. Sticking to the old version is ridiculous, like insisting on using the word 'coloured' when it's widely rejected now in favour of 'black'.

I just found it amusing that the word was originally brought in for the same reasons you claim it should now be shunned.

It's certainly linguistically interesting, but the same is true of many words relating to marginalised groups. Preferences change - sometimes to reclaim a word (like 'queer') and at other times to reject one (like 'coloured' or 'retard').
