Oh, there are parts of it that are cogent (and the environmentalist bits sometimes especially so), but as a whole it was clear he'd jumped the rails.

Misunderstood book. He probably (obviously?) was unhinged but a lot of it seems prescient now. Those ideas are a lot less out-there than they used to be...
As I said, much of his environmental critique hit the nail on the head, and certainly some of the general reaction was a response to discomfort with how closely it hit home. But his preferred solutions and much of his thinking was very clearly misanthropic.
You've shifted the goalposts from "it was disjointed and confused" to "it was cogent but his solutions misanthropic". I was going to accuse you of not having read it, but now I just think you're generally dishonest.
