We can't duck difficult conversations on integration, said Boris. Yet he set the difficulty bar pretty low. My suggestions @capx - from engaging with young Muslim women on integration & challenging Saudi Arabia on human rights - on how to keep that pledgehttps://capx.co/how-to-have-difficult-conversations/ …

The problem with this, Sunder, is that it misses the central point of Boris' recommended approach, which was that disrespecting veiling (demanding its removal sometimes & mocking it others) was better than banning it. Disrespect was the *policy*.https://reaction.life/boris-within-rights-disrespect-burka/ …

      - I agree bans counterproductive. regressive voices push a "The State wants to ban Islam" to attack pro-integration veil-sceptic co-religionists - I agree respecting freedom of expression does not entail neutrality about the choices that people make. (< 1% better than 10%). BUT

      - I disagree discouragement requires ridicule. Who was the mockery for? (Which audience was the piece for)? Unhelpful for most Muslims, men & women who want to discourage veil. Irresponsible when there is street abuse (which veil's opponents must also oppose, & not legitimise).

Reason its not 'difficult' piece is lack of *any* challenge to his Telegraph audience (pro-integration not veil fine; but GB public more likely to think 9 million than 3 million Muslims). And I don't believe piece shows any serious motive to engage (non-veiled) Muslim women.

Some elected MPs have long backed a ban, eg Dorries & Hollobone. I would rather people spoke for a ban, civilly, than risk legitimising street abuse of terms like letterbox while opposing one. Though a ban unlikely in UK given widespread conservative scepticism about legislation.
