So the *good* thing about Wikipedia being Youtube’s fact checker is that it’s the only community run site that is *generally* viewed as not being *too* partisan and has demonstrated it can handle large attempts to game and abuse it.

The bad bit is that there’s a good chance that YouTube is sending millions of abusive conspiracy minded crazies in Wikipedia’s direction and just *hoping* that it’s resilient enough to withstand it. This is not a given!

A responsible thing to do in this situation would be to communicate with Wikipedia’s staff and contributors and do some test articles first to see what the effect might be.

I genuinely don’t think people appreciate what a miracle of Self organization and Self management Wikipedia is, and the sheer volume of policy, editing support and work that contributors engage in to sustain it.

There is a substantial danger here that YouTube is treating wikipedia like a commons only in the sense of “tragedy of the commons” - ie. It is saving money itself by shunting the work onto a common good, potentially killing that good in the process.

Since I have your ears, I’d really like to point you to one of the very many (non-secret) behind the scenes pages for Wikipedia that shows quite how much daily work goes on there:https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Community_portal …

I think you’re being too hopeful in this case. When it comes to conspiracists like the gamerg***rs, Wikipedia has proven to be far too subject to a small, invested few.

I don’t think I’m being at all optimistic. At core I think Wikipedia does hold a position of being comprehensive, mostly non-partisan and far *far* better at handling fact-checking, balance and information integrity than any other community based service.

My hope is that those who believe all should have access to high quality information will join in at least equal number. And our policies will give their contributions greater weight. Thus resulting in an overall good. But yes we need to pay attention to potential harms.
