My wife from Peru got her masters here but she still has an accent. She was speaking to some dude for about ten minutes in English and he asked her who translated her press releases from Spanish to English. He then told her he didn’t think she spoke English. Ur like that dude

Good news for anyone that ever interviewed Cesar Chavez. Anything you say is automatically "not-racist".
-
LMAO yes I was wondering why he threw Chavez in the mix, wow, like "some of my best friends are black" from the ole days

You’re a former journalist and yes the rules on Twitter are fast and loose, but have the common sense to use appropriate capitalization on a name, esp when invoking him in ur defense, Cesar Chavez.

1/ ...a common theme against foreign born residents in the USA, especially from Latin America & the Caribbean. It doesn't matter if they have much higher academic & professional achievements, and speak fluent English w/a NON-AMERICAN ACCENT; in addition to their native language.
-
2/ Such attitude could be understandable if emanated from a Trump supporter; not so from a world-class journalist who should set a better tone to eliminate ignorant expressions like "You speak w/an accent" when 'accent' is a specific entonation-- including the American accent.
-
3/ I was born in the same US Naval Hospital in Panama as John McCain (he, 1936; I, 1946) but we had different accents b/c we were raised in segregated communities on the US Canal Zone: his, White American; mine, Black Caribbean.
-
4/ Today I am very close to a White American lady who grew-up in Panama within similar settings as McCain; both of us are 72 years-old. What's the common thread between us? The USA's Canal Zone in Panama. I do plead to you
@tombrokaw to use your influence to eliminate ignorancy.

Don’t “my best friend is Hispanic” this. That’s not the route you want to go.

He keeps going, but fails to recognize, the contributions of Latina/o/x people in US society are many. Our history is US history. Certain people just keep erasing it to uphold the idea that we never existed before 2019 and are somehow a “new constituency”

Using the "But I've got a black friend" ploy only digs you in deeper.

I remember reading his book Greatest Gen and Mexicans were mentioned as laborers (braceros) or thugs (zoot-suiters) even though about 500,000 Mexican American participated in the war effort. Nothing more American than that
