I increasingly feel that "security", as the name of a type of emergent property of whole systems, is poorly specified and should be retired.

How about using an oversimplified 1-dimensional definition: degree of security = market price for unauthorized access.

Ah, yes. System means the in-scope human process and the set of tools used to implement it, some of which may be computers.
