I'm using a hub, but at some point of the enumeration handshake gets disrupted the laptop's apparently still hangs

Nope. I want one, but they're pretty pricey. (Heck, I finally just got a scope!) The office may get one eventually.

Well worth it. Catches problems that won't make it into the os. Controller hw is a big blind spot.

In the mean time I just have an inexpensive scope and a Saleae logic analyzer (love that thing!)
