How do you get people to teach you things without assuming you're an idiot... At the local hackerspace there are people with a lot of experience relevant to my interests but when I ask they proceed to go over the absolute basics like I didn't do an entire degree in this stuff.

It's just hard to establish this. Talk jargon back in a calm way. People tend to just correct for your level.

Yes, that's precisely what I do.
"Did you mean something like [insert appropriate technical terms here]".
Although it's important to use a tone that suggests you're just trying to learn & are genuinely interested rather than one that suggests you're trying to assert authority.

I may have derailed it when he started out by asking if I knew about [technical terms] and I was not entirely positively convincing because I was a bit rusty on exactly how they worked and what he was referring to.

So probably what happens was "I'm not sure if [dutch technical term] is [technical term I learned] and if it froops sideways or up" vs "this guy doesn't even know [technical terms]"
