In today's episode of "I didn't see *that* coming," I just A/B'ed my way *out* of buying a new set of mic preamps.
In related news, I'm reconfirmed as an RME fanboy. Now, if they'd just do a dedicated 8-channel line-to-ADAT converter at a reasonable price...

I started buying Delta1010 breakout boxes. Apparently these tend to get separated from their PCI cards so you can get them for cheap (around $30 I usually buy). The cable protocol is 4 x I2S with shared clocks using a 5V line driver over a printer cable.

I recently ran into some VHDL code for ADAT protocol. Idea is to use these Delta1010 boxes in a custom synth on FPGA, or make an interface to link them to Ethernet or maybe ADAT (I have an RME card I found in an abandoned PC a decade ago...)
