Why is it that when I see someone working on something similar to my project my brain goes "welp, that's it, they will do it better anyway, abandon it".

Change is kind of the goal :-) I've recently picked it up again after realizing it isn't optional if I want to keep sane. I do different things based on what's going on at a particular time, but mostly Mahasi style noting practice.

Inertia seems important. Keeping it going isn't nearly as hard as restarting. I practice alone at night when it's quiet. I've not done social sits in a while. Recently moved, might check out some places here once Covid calms down.
