Where's the tutorial that shows me how to make a PC from scratch? Or an Amiga 500? Yes, they are complex, but they're not impenetrable. I feel like they deserve to be taken apart, documented and reassembled step-by-step in an open-source fashion. Are we just not there yet?

I should note that you can of course get everything in an Amiga 500 and more besides in a single microcontroller costing £4. But it is all hidden inside the die, and I think there is value in using a microprocessor with an external bus from a educational point of view.

An FPGA SoC has a similar problem to an ASIC SoC, in that the insides are largely opaque and hard to observe and study. I have a MiSTer and it's great fun, but fixing a bug in the ao486 implementation was just an awful experience.
