I was going to say overflows but maybe it's better to have a sentinel value that's always invalid between maxint and minint

I've seen it used like that. For 16 bit 0x8000 meaning missing measurement, 0x7fff and 0x8001 meaning saturation (also error), and the rest meaning valid measurement.
