This is a decent commentary on the whole Meta/Oculus mess: youtube.com/watch?v=iV2RQ5
In particular I am still boggling at abandoning the "Oculus" brand, and now also "Rift".

The smart move would have been renaming the whole company to Oculus. It was an extraordinarily good brand with massive positive recognition.

Or sure name the company Meta if you need to, but keep the Facebook and Oculus brands. It's not that difficult - companies do it all the time (e.g. Alphabet, VAG, etc)

"The" is not the right word. When I was there, every six months we'd have a new version planned. That's just normal.

Going to check out the vid. I have to admit I never knew where the name "Rift" came from and "Quest" does seem more appealing, but loosing "Oculus", 100% agree , "Oculus" was such a good brand name.

would know better, but I believe "Rift" came from the fact that it would transport you from one reality to another - a rift in time and space!

1st Oculus buyer, built non-tri engine rendering pixel perfect AA into warped space directly (>120 Hz on laptop). Later Valve+Oculus disable ability to render into VR display directly. VR went Totalitarian Dictatorship, no longer a country some of us had any interest living in.

A nicely articulated and well though out summary of my own feelings. Depressing as hell. VR's one of the few things I can truly say, without cliche (okay, a little), has significantly changed my life for the better. My Index, DK2, CV1 are genuinely my most prized possessions.

Reasonable video from perspective of someone who loves VR, experimental creative immersion, VR gaming.
But not reasonable - at all - from the perspective of 4th largest company that desperately tries to a) have a platform b) serve billions c) run away from failing ad business.
