Coal is Exhibit A when it comes to the disconnect between what people *think* is happening and what is *actually* happening. We haven’t made coal history. We’ve reached a global plateau, where declines in some places are offset by increases elsewhere. So much work to do still.

The new annual coal market report provides a sobering reality check on efforts to cut emissions to net zero Global electricity generation from coal is expected to jump 9% in 2021 to a historic high, driven by the rapid economic rebound Our report ➡️

Our Scenario sees total methane emissions from fossil fuel operations fall by about 75% by 2030. 1/3 of this comes from a drop in fossil fuel consumption. The rest is driven by a rapid deployment of emissions reduction measures & technologies 👉

    1/ 1.8C, 1.9C or 2.4C or 2.7C? - What’s the warming in line with the pledges? A *long* thread.

Also, the pledges – even if they're implemented in full – clearly dont yet put us on track for 1.5 °C. In fact, full delivery of all them would close only 30% of the gap to where we need to be in 2030.

There's no guarantee that governments will implement their pledges. And, based on today’s policy settings, the temperature would hit 2.6 °C in 2100 (and rising)...

The pledges made are undoubtedly significant, and this is the first time governments have come up with targets ambitious enough to hold warming to below 2°C. But...

We've put together a detailed paper describing the key inputs and results for our recent finding that global warming could be limited to 1.8C if (big if) all climate pledges made to date are achieved in full and on time 👇👇

1/ NEW BRIEFING: Making sense of 1.8C, 1.9C and 2.7C. We projected that new NDCs and long-term targets, IF adequately supported and implemented, could limit peak warming to 1.9C & also put forward 1.8C. Yet, what about 2.7C? Briefing here:
