NEW: We found TurboTax has *deliberately* hidden from Google its free option for lower-income Americans. did this by adding "robots" code that tells search engines not to find the free page. Many folks who could file for free were charged.

Fascinating thread, showing that it’s possible that could potentially be recalibrated to interact with civil society- and that doing so may be in the best interests of the Chinese companies/state.

This is not an endorsement of Warren. I don't like all her plans. She is way too enthusiastic about solutions based on markets and competition, which threatens to undermine all the good intentions behind her plans. But she's doing a crucial and difficult thing really well

Both in her account of what is happening in the world, and in her proposals, Warren is navigating the tension between particularism and universalism better than anyone else

Warren then proposed a plan for some kind of government-led housing program designed to help all working people (universalism), but which would prioritize, in particular, Black people who have been hurt by redlining (particularism)

E.g. she told a story about housing from the 40s to the Civil Rights Movement to subprime mortgages to today. The central theme of her story was the role of racism (particularism) - but it was at the same time a story about economic changes that affect everyone (universalism)

Warren was able to combine particularism (politics that focuses on the oppression faced by particular groups) and universalism (politics that focuses on the exploitation and oppression faced by the whole working class). This is crucial work for all of us

Super impressed by at the forum. She zeroed in on the specific forms of oppression faced by women of color, while doing a great job of bridging the gap between "identity politics" and "class politics"

This week I look at China's Belt & Road lending. One common criticism is that China is trapping weaker countries in debt so as to gain leverage over them. That misses the point: the real danger is ineptitude and arrogance, not a grand evil plan. (1/)

Warren has had some great ideas, this is not one of the them. We already have "value-based purchasing", a program that gives hospitals bonuses for health outcomes; it has been thoroughly studied and has been found to be completely and utterly ineffectual.

There is growing evidence the US campaign to sow doubt among countries in LatAm & Africa abt the dangers of engaging China is simply not working. While people have concerns about the Chinese, they don't seem to be taking cues from Washington on this issue:

This form of politics has a lot of potential both in the “center” (apparently) and on the right where I think it could rapidly displace climate change denial

Big news here. Are there security risks? Yes. But freezing Chinese companies doing high value production out of the global economy is a much more serious security risk because it dramatically increases the danger of nationalism and great power conflict.
