Standard bodies have increasingly adopted open source-inspired tools and practices over the last few years. Specs are developed on GitHub, whose issue tracker has mostly replaced mailing lists. Some working groups are now test driven.

At the same time, open source projects have started adopting practices traditionally found in (some) standard bodies: code of conducts, open governance models, consensus driven decision making, etc.

Overall, this has been a net positive so far, it has helped make standardization more nimble and agile, and open source more inclusive and transparent.

Already, some standard bodies are setting themselves up to become more like software foundations, see for exemple https://oasis-open-projects.org .

Similarly, foundations at the forefront have started to include open governance requirements for their projects, see for example @the_jsf.

What future does this convergence hold? Will we see browser vendors, for example, coalesce around a single open source rendering engine with a strong open governance model for its code base?

Can this convergence help bring a legal and ethical framework for things like AI?

We are observing the use of open source for standards as well. The SPDX standard was developed open source, for example, showing a track record within the LF for standards work: https://doi.org/10.1145/3148330.3148333 …
