The Tragedy of The Boomer is that powerful forces animated by demonic malevolence offered them Pleasure Island in exchange for their children being turned into donkeys.

When corporations could no longer draw on organic, bottom-up culture, because they basically became the culture, they filled the void with special effects and action, rehashed old stories ad nauseam and looked to the highly educated class to construct what once was organic.

My take is that corporations were only at the start of being the dominant influence on culture, so they embraced organic culture, but didn't take it too seriously and tried turning everything into a theme park. The theme park appearance is one of the unifying aesthetics.

Movies like Raiders, Last Crusade and even Ghostbusters, The Exorcist, etc., still just about accepted biblical Christianity as normative, which wasn’t as possible after the 90s. That’s helpful, rather than having to create a new mythology from scratch.

Can’t make this up. Chesa Boudin dropped gun charges in retaliation when a victim’s family eviscerated him for refusing to do anything resembling his job. He must be recalled in June. This is a dangerous ideologue who hurts our citizens. This is not criminal justice reform.

imagine a piece by a man that's like "i want to be back on Tinder" but he has to frame it as like "i want to teach my kids to be open to life and new experiences and to dive into the watery mirror that reflects their depths"

At a more general/abstract level evolutionary dynamism requires both replication and recombination. Stuck culture is an excess of the former, but I suspect that unconstrained novelty also indicates cultural pathologies. What's the optimal mutation rate?

e.g. the difference between the original Star Wars and the Abrams sequels, or for that matter the difference between the original West Side Story reimagining Shakespeare and Spielberg just remaking the reimagining.

The thing you supposedly gave them isn't real though unfortunately. This is some shit you write to take up space in an essay you get a B on in an undergrad class called Perspectives on Writing

In some ways, the *stuck* culture tells us that this grim prospect is partly avoided; the rehearsal of earlier forms&the three billionth Spiderman movie (itself an explicit montage of earlier installations) at least tell us that the enclosed culture struggles to produce its crop.

The truly dystopian outcome, of course, is one of success rather than failure- that corporate bodies that enclosed more&more of the culture will be able to *successfully* monopolize our attention, and implictly direct our values and life-ways without competition or resistance.

It doesn't help that people's own life off of screens is less+less vivid,as well. We're led to a sort of medievalism, in which we can comment on and illuminate texts from an earlier age but struggle against both intellectual limitations and institutional bonds in creating our own

What *is* available for free exploration - in many ways easier than ever to access- is preserved culture of over 100 years ago, before the current intellectual property regime. But a gulf separates us from them& they lack the commercial juice that makes for American syncretic art
