Remember when you used to be able to rent games from Blockbuster? How is it that movies got a digital version of renting, but games never did?

But for game studios it makes absolutely zero sense from a business perspective. Game companies only begrudgingly accepted rentals in the brick and mortar days. There's little upside to them. Again, I'd love it as a consumer, but it makes no sense from a $$$ perspective.
I think it does make sense. I’m a potential customer CDProjekt will never see. If I could rent, I would be a customer.

Also MMO subscriptions are basically a form of rentals.

Well that is what you will see, software as a service. Already seeing it as you said with MMOs, and services like Microsoft NVidia and Sony have recently launched. Dozens of companies are trying it and have tried it. Even Nintendo is getting into it.
