Using a pointer to a method is code smell of bad architecture.

Message handling provides a nice non-technical way of thinking about a problem/solution, and so may be considered good, but fails to consider the nature of the platform it runs on. Hence, while it can be nice, the presence of method delegates is “architecture smell”.

1000 line switch statements stink worse. What properties of quality are you using to conclude this? Performance is less important than the cleanliness of partitioning you can get from Chain of Responsibility; one of the tenants of message handling.
