How do you talk to someone that involves a topic they may not understand? 1) I feel like it might be condescending to even do a light explanation. 2) I feel like asking them "have you heard of <arcane BS>" is rude too. I've been "lightly explaining" lately, not sure if best way..
Now if they ask, it's different. Then I try to follow the before and after rule. Before: let them know they can stop you if there's something they don't understand (esp abbreviations). After: Ask them if you did a good enough job explaining it.

The after part of the rule is important, esp with junior engineers who lack the confidence to ask questions. Like they *should* know something and don't want to betray their inexperience by asking a Q.

Asking if you did a good enough job explaining it is better than asking if they understood it. Puts the fault on you if they didn't understand. Lets them feel more empowered to ask when they normally might not.
