It's true that the digital marketplace has reduced that barrier for smaller devs, but for AAA games, marketing and distribution costs are no less than they used to be.

And as Brad pointed out, current digital marketplaces don't make discoverability a priority. You don't get your game in front of eyeballs the way a case sitting on a store shelf did.
