If a mode or variation of the core game became popular enough to warrant its own thing, yeah. They probably would.
And for branding power, they'd probably keep the same name. This isn't a new or unique idea.

What do you think guild wars 2 is? Originally, an XPac for GW1. Varied enough and they took the time to make it it's own thing.

The only difference is that Daybreak let you see that process. ANet doesn't share the same open development process, so we didn't see it.
