I wonder if anyone has made a reverse metroidvania where you lose abilities / access as you progress. I wonder how you could make that fun

Play it out like the movie Memento. You alternate playing two characters. One progresses forward, the other progresses back. At the end (or middle, as it were) you realize they are the same character and the middle is a key transformation point.
I suppose, one character is still getting more progression, but the other is at least getting weaker.
