What is the cause of this? Terrible html generation tools? The assumption that "html is cheap" and so they just don't care? This sort of thing is obviously not maintainable by humans directly. TBH it reminds me of WCF monstrosities.

Twitter is built in React. Even if the final generated HTML is unreadable/unmaintainable, no developer is going through it. I’m assuming the React code IS quite maintainable and probably easy to read.
