You make good points! (i will say that actually trying to ship a game brings up issues you don't ever get to if you aren't trying to ship one though!) For what it's worth, i also think that individuals or smaller groups have more chance for actually succeeding here hehe.

Making an engine without a game as a goal is definitely not completely sustainable, but I think that dooming it to failure is ignoring what happens when creativity kicks in later after you learn what goals and themes are fun and worth making a real product from.
