Even at work, I will often bodge something together in a few hours. Prove it's viability. Then decide if it's worth continuing that approach or not. Game Jams can help you get comfortable experimenting and not getting stuck in design paralysis.

Jams shouldn't be ALL a student does. And I wouldn't fault a student for having participated in no jams at all. But they can be useful.
