MGPU is a tough nut to crack. Your engine has to coordinate the two GPUs itself, rather than relying on the driver doing it for you through SLI. But it's more flexible. You can use MGPU to work with two GPUs from entirely different hardware vendors.

I think an easy win for MPGU is utilizing the integrated GPU most desktops have. You pop a card in your rig and your integrated GPU sits there on the mobo unused. It's processing power we have already that we often don't use.
