One of the most respectable things I've ever heard in game dev, is that to combat crunch at blizzard, Mike Morhaime required people be paid overtime pay. Individual game teams then had to fix their production problems or perish (and risk of the whole company perishing too).

Did it work? I worked at blizzard for 8 years and worked 2 late nights, voluntairily, not asked to. Other people have had more than that, but nothing remotely close to what is seen in the rest of the industry.
