Hey US, how long are you going to keep calling it "new" York? You think anyone outside the UK knows where the original York even is?
My understanding is that it’s normally people from one land settled America and called places “New <where they came from>”. In Jersey’s case, New Jersey was given to the governor of Jersey by King Charles. It’s always something like that.

Not always though. There’s a town in Michigan just called Holland. Lots of Dutch origin Americans there.
