Even when you do know about the Channel Islands, why someone would go "yes, this part of a vast continent is just like the tiny island I was born that is nothing like here" is one of life's mysteries.

My understanding is that it’s normally people from one land settled America and called places “New <where they came from>”. In Jersey’s case, New Jersey was given to the governor of Jersey by King Charles. It’s always something like that.
