There should be a way to punish programmers when we add too much complexity to something just because it makes us feel good. Like, maybe a shock collar.
Rather than looking at it as punishment, because that doesn’t seem actionable anyway, are there positive things to encourage simplicity? Maybe a design process that iterates through adding based on need, then simplification, and repeat?

For instance, I like to design the API of a thing first. How will user code look? What is the essential form of that API that I need? I tend to get simple results (or at least am able to hide complexity) from this practice.
