Worked on a project where everything communicated through messages, because receiver may not be on the same server as the sender. 99.999% of the time it was. Serialized a lot of messages to itself that could have been just holding onto a pointer instead.
To be fair, we could have peeked the destination, saw it was this server, and done some branching path. But the project was big by the time I got to it and it wasn't clear how much would actually be gained. So we kept serializing messages to ourselves.

Kinda worse, messages sent to self were sent "inline". So they were serialized and further down the callstack, unserialized. The more I think about it the more it was laughably bad, despite the good intentions of the larger system design.
