Is there a worse open source project than glslang? This thing is a nightmare to link against. Virtually 0 documentation. The http://readme.md on github basically lists a few function names and says "use these". Helpful. Thanks.

So there's no easy way to just put a minimal "assemblies and header" in your project directory. Unless you're ready to surgically extract the necessary parts, you may as well just drop their whole damn repo in your project.

Is this collateral damage of being an open source project? Did the project make decisions early on that they couldn't fix because of backward compatibility? How did it get to be such a disgusting experience?

It's just typical C++ source code without any regard of someone else wanting to link to it. Sane libraries always provide C (or at least C-like C++) interface for linking. Not std::string and std::vector as arguments and return values.

Other libs in that toolchain are not much better with exception of spirv-cross.
