If the clip just needs to be a rectangle, as is most of the time, I just use scissor. But yeah, if you need something other than that, stencil is likely the best route? Sometimes you have no stencil bits though. I suppose you can also clip the geometry on the CPU too.

I’m still in the early stages, but cpu clipping is already what I’m doing for oriented shapes inside of oriented shapes. I don’t really want to tesselate a rounded corner though.

I render the widget as 9 quads and use textures w/ alpha to create the corner or edge shape. Only works for relatively simple stuff though.

Right, and I'm interested in *literally* arbitrary vector shapes. Limitations are real-time and fairly strict memory limitations.
